Interceptive Orthodontics: Early Phases in Class II and Class III Cases

Thu 10 Apr | 11:00 - 11:30

The referral of a Class II or III malocclusion, whether dental or skeletal, in primary or mixed dentition presents a challenge for general dentists and pediatric dentists. It is essential to consider factors such as age, tissue maturation, hereditary influences, and facial growth patterns, as these affect the malocclusion’s progression and response to treatment. In primary and mixed dentition, the approach must differ from that of permanent dentition, as early intervention can prevent or mitigate the worsening of problems. In Class II malocclusions, it is crucial to determine whether the dysfunction is dental or skeletal, while in Class III cases, early intervention is analyzed to correct the growth pattern. Diagnostic tools such as radiographs, models, and cephalometric analysis are highlighted as essential for an accurate diagnosis. The goal is to guide dentists in determining the right timing for treatment and selecting the most effective strategy based on the case’s nature and severity.
