New Criteria for Indicating (or Not) Treatment in OSA
Sleep medicine is a new and constantly evolving specialty. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has advanced significantly in clinical assessment, diagnostic processes, diagnostic criteria, and therapeutic approaches, making it a condition that requires a multidisciplinary approach. This team includes pulmonologists, neurophysiologists, dentists, otolaryngologists, maxillofacial surgeons, psychologists, and psychiatrists. For this reason, in this presentation, we aim to review and update the diagnostic criteria for OSA that all specialists should be familiar with, while also discussing the different treatments available today from each specialist. The goal is to provide a cross-sectional understanding of the disease, which will help in selecting the ideal treatment or combination of treatments that can most benefit each patient, potentially even curing the patient. At the same time, we will provide a practical approach for dental professionals, who currently play an important role in both the detection and diagnosis of sleep apnea, as well as in its treatment, especially with mandibular advancement devices and the therapeutic follow-up of these patients.
